Election Results
The winners for the 2000 ACS Akron Section positions of Chair Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, Councilor, and Alternate Councilor are Liam Guiney, Ruth Murray, Bruce Darlington, Jim Visintainer, and Dan Jones, respectively. The section gives the most sincere thanks to all of the candidates who ran in the election and are willing to donate their valuable time serving the section. The newly elected officers, who will begin their terms on January 1, will be joined by Pam Lane, Chuck Galloway, Jim Duddey, and Roger Crawford in the positions of Chair, Past Chair, Councilor, and Alternate Councilor, respectively.
General Meeting
The December general meeting of the ACS Akron Section will be held on Wednesday evening December 15, 1999 at Tangier in Akron. Mike Askew and Dan Smith from Summa Health System will discuss Polymers in Orthopaedic Surgery. The schedule is social at 5:15, dinner at 6:00, business at 6:55, and presentation at 7:00. The program is free and open to the public. Dinner costs $14 for members and guests and $7 for students. Committee Meeting
The December Executive Committee meeting of the ACS Akron Section will be held on Tuesday December 7 at 5:10 pm, in the University of Akron Knight Chemical Laboratories. Members of the committee who cannot attend are urged to submit reports to the Secretary. Other issues can be addressed to the Chair. This will be the final meeting for the 1999 Executive Committee.
Annual Elections
The ACS Akron Section is conducting its 1999 annual elections. The individuals involved are: for Chair-Elect, Liam Guiney; for Secretary, Ruth Murray; for Treasurer, Bruce Darlington; and for Councilor and Alternate-Councilor, Jim Visintainer and Dan Jones. Many thanks to these dedicated individuals who are willing to take time from their professional and personal lives to lead the section and serve the membership. Eligible members of the section should receive their packet of election materials in mid-November. Packets will be mailed to the same addresses used for the Akron ChemLine. General Meeting
The November general meeting of the ACS Akron Section will be held on Wednesday evening November 17, 1999 at Tangier in Akron. Helen Freefrom the Bayer Corp and Tom Sawyer from the U.S. Congress will discuss Outreach at the Grassroots Level. The schedule is social at 5:15, dinner at 6:00, business at 6:55, and presentation at 7:00. The program is free and open to the public. Dinner costs $14 for members and guests and $7 for students. Additional Meeting
The ACS Akron section is jointly sponsoring the November general meeting of the SPE (Society of Plastics Engineers) Akron Section on Monday evening November 15 at Martin University Center in Akron. Steven Streitel from Dayglo Color Corp will speak on Luminescent Colorants: Fluorescent and Phosphorescent Materials and David Johnson of Ferro Corp will speak on Geode Complex Inorganic Color Pigments. The schedule is social at 5:30, colorants presentation at 6:00, dinner at 6:30, and pigments presentation at 7:15. This event is part of the Global Salute to Polymers and has the theme The Chemistry of Color. ACESS Banquet
The annual banquet of the Akron Council of Engineering and Scientific Societies will take place on Thursday evening November 4 at Tangier in Akron. Luis Proenza of the University of Akron will speak on Engineering and Science: an Infrastructure for the New Millenium. Robert Handelman of the Chemstress Consultant Co. is Honorary Banquet Chair. The schedule is cash bar at 5:30, dinner at 6:30, and presentation after dinner. Tickets cost $25 and must be purchased by October 29; contact Jan Ruthenburg at 330-535-8835.
The Distinguished Award of Council will be presented to E Charles Galloway of the Edison Polymer Innovation Corporation (retired). The ACESS Award will be presented to Ruth Murray of the ACS Rubber Division (retired). Both Chuck and Ruth are active in the ACS Akron Section, so good attendance at the banquet by ACS members would be appreciated. The ACS Akron Section will also use this opportunity to present its own Glenn Brown Distinguished Service Award to Jim Hermiller and to award several scholarships to outstanding area college chemistry majors.

Gus Eskamani from the Cleveland Area Manufacturers Program (CAMP) will discuss the Northeast Ohio Chemical Industry Collaborative. The schedule is social at 5:15, dinner at 6:00, business at 6:55, and presentation at 7:00. The program is free and open to the public. Dinner costs $18 for members and guests and $8 for students. Career Development
The ACS Akron and Cleveland Sections will present seminars on career development for undergraduate and graduate students and professional scientists. The series of seminars using ACS career consultants, career services presenters, and local section career coordinators will be presented on October 20, 1999, prior to the October general meeting of the ACS Akron and Cleveland Sections at the BFGoodrich Technical Center in Brecksville.
The seminars will run between 3:30 pm and 5:45 pm. The topics to be covered are resume writing, job searching on the Internet, interviewing skills, career opportunities and targeting the job market, and resume review. Family Picnic
The annual Akron section family picnic will be on Friday, September 17, 1999 at the Big Oaks shelter at Portage Lakes State Park. Frank Kolby from the Akron Astronomy Club will be our speaker. He will have the telescope at Portage Lakes set up for viewing and will also give a slide presentation. The topic will be announced in the September Akron ChemLine. Dinner will be catered by Bar B Que Express and include chicken, ribs, cole slaw, rolls and dessert. The cost is $10 for adults and $5 for children ages 6-12, and $0 for children ages 0-5. The shelter does not have electricity so dinner will be early - 5:30PM.
