General Meeting
The May general meeting of the ACS Akron Section will be held on Wednesday evening May 24, 2000 at Tangier in Akron. Richard Elder from the University of Cincinnati will discuss The Strange Evolution of Gold Chemistry in Medicine . The schedule is social at 5:15, dinner at 6:00, business at 6:55, and presentation at 7:00. The program is free and open to the public. Dinner costs $14 for members and guests and $7 for students. Special Lecture
A special lecture will be held on Wednesday afternoon May 24 in Knight Chemical Laboratory room 321 at the University of Akron. Richard Elder from the University of Cincinnati will lecture on Radio-pharmaceuticals as Palliatives for Metastatic Bone Cancer. The presentation is at 3:00. The program is free and open to the public. Parking is free because classes are not in session.
Fifty-Year Members
Congratulations to the Akron Section's newest fifty-year ACS members; Marie Louise Barzan, Robert James Fawcett, Kenneth James Frech, H James Harwood, William George Krochta, John M Questel, Jack D Strang, Alan G Veith, Warren Kenneth Wilson, and Charles W Taylor Jr.
Regional Meeting
The ACS Central Regional Meeting will be held May 16 to 19 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center in Covington Kentucky. The ACS Cincinnati Section serves as the host section. The meeting will feature forty invited symposia, awards in several categories, the regional employment clearinghouse, short courses and workshops, vendor exhibits, and social activities. May Conference
The annual May Conference will take place on May 17 at the Airport Holiday Inn in Cleveland. The ACS Cleveland Section serves as a co-host with two other organizations. A keynote speech and parallel sessions of papers will proceed throughout the day followed by a banquet. Please call Ron Barona at 216-524-0888 for more information.
Committee Meeting
The May Executive Committee meeting of the ACS Akron Section will be held on Tuesday May 2 at 5:10 pm, in the University of Akron Knight Chemical Laboratories. Members of the committee who cannot attend are urged to submit reports to the Secretary. Other issues can be addressed to the Chair. This will be the final meeting before summer break.

ACESS Meeting
A special meeting of the Akron Council of Engineering and Scientific Societies (ACESS), of which the ACS Akron Section is a member, will be held on Tuesday evening April 25, 2000 at Tangier in Akron. Richard L Erickson from NE Ohio Regional Business Coalition will discuss Technology Opportunities in Northeast Ohio. The schedule is social at 5:30, dinner at 6:00 and program at 7:00. Membership Survey
Pam Lane has prepared an important survey form for the membership of the section. Copies of the form were inserted into the February issue of the Akron ChemLine newsletter. Additional copies can be printed from a file in the Newsletters section of this web site. If you are a member of the section, please complete and return this survey as soon as possible. Members responding by March 23 will be eligible for one of five ACS prizes.

Mooney Award
At the spring Rubber Division meeting in Dallas Texas, the national Melvin Mooney Distinguished Technology Award will be presented to Joseph A Kuczkowski for his work in the field of rubber stabilization. Joe is Research and Development Associate for the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company and a member of the ACS Akron Section. Dr Kuczkowski holds twenty-two patents in the area of rubber chemicals and stabilization and has nine products or processes that are currently in use, including several in Goodyear's Wingstay family of rubber additives.
Engineers Banquet
The local celebration of National Engineers Week will take place on Thursday evening February 24 at Emidios Banquet Center in Cuyahoga Falls. Steve Love and David Giffels will be the featured speakers with the topic Wheels of Fortune: the Story of Rubber in Akron. The schedule is social at 5:30 and dinner and program at 6:30. The second annual Crano Memorial Lecture will be held on Wednesday afternoon February 16 in Goodyear Auditorium at the University of Akron. Anthony Trozzolo from Notre Dame University will lecture on Photochromic Aziridines - The Odyssey of Ylides that Curl Up and Dye. The schedule is refreshments at 2:30 and presentation at 3:00. The program is free and open to the public.

Publicity Poll
At the November general meeting, Morgan Sibbald, the Chair of the Public Relations committee, conducted an informal poll as to how the attendees learned the meeting details. A tally of the responses of those people polled showed that eleven people chose the Akron ChemLine newsletter, eight people chose the Executive Committee meeting, four people chose the ACS Akron Section News e-mail, two people chose the ACS Akron Section web site, one person chose the Akron Beacon Journal meeting announcement, and one person chose word of mouth.

Richard Jones from Sinclair Community College will demonstrate The Science of the Art of Glassblowing. The schedule is appetizers and soft drinks at 5:30 and demonstration at 6:00. The program is free and open to the public. Parking is free in all lots. Appetizers and soft drinks cost $3. The January Executive Committee meeting of the ACS Akron Section will be held on Tuesday January 4 at 5:10 pm, in the University of Akron Knight Chemical Laboratories. Since school is not in session, please use the north end building entrance and do not use parking passes or meters. This will be the first meeting for the 2000 Executive Committee.
