The American Chemical Society is the world's largest professional society and its Akron Section is one of the society's 188 local sections. The society was founded in 1876 and chartered by congress in 1937, and its 155,000 members are practitioners of the chemical sciences. The society promotes science education, science research, and public understanding of science.

The ACS Akron Section serves Summit, Portage, and Stark counties, including the cities of Akron, Canton, and Kent, in the state of Ohio. This local section was established in 1923 and has around 970 members, most of whom are employed by Akron area industry and are working in the field of polymer science. The activities of the section benefit the members of the section and residents of the community, and include public outreach, chemical education, and professional service. The section enables its members to interact with other chemists in the area, to participate in programs that will enhance their professional development, and to contribute to public understanding and appreciation of chemistry.

The ACS Akron Section runs a program of general meetings for its members and the public. The program is created by its Program Committee, under the leadership of the Chair Elect. A varied and exciting series of speakers and presentations, arranged both locally and nationally, is brought to the meetings, which are held monthly from September through May. Some meetings are held jointly with other organizations which have similar interests, such as neighboring sections of the American Chemical Society or the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.

The location for most of the general meetings is Tangier, centrally located in the section's geographic area and easily accessible using major highways. Tangier provides excellent meeting facilities and most necessary equipment at no charge to the section, and for those members who choose to join us for social and dinner, the quality and cost of food and refreshments is a good value. The dates for most general meetings are the third Wednesdays of the month, except when holidays or conflicts make another date more practical. The times usually have social, dinner, business, and presentation around 5:15, 6:00, 6:50, and 7:00 pm respectively.

The section is a non-profit, tax-exempt organization with IRS tax-exempt number 34-65243266 and IRS group exemption number 0945. The postal address is 807 West Market St, Akron OH 44303, which is the ACESS office located in the basement of the West Hill Branch Library. The web site address is //web.raex.com/~jimh/, which is part of the webmaster's personal Internet space but will someday relocate to the membership server in the ChemCenter web site.
